What is a Tabletop RPG?
Tabletop role-playing games (RPGs) based on the System Reference Document are collaborative storytelling games where you and your friends tell an interactive story together. Think of it as collaborative storytelling with rules, dice, and lots of imagination!
The Basics
In these RPGs, one person takes on the role of the Game Master (GM), who describes the world and controls the story. Everyone else plays a character - a hero in the story with their own personality, abilities, and goals.
What Makes These Games Special?
- Your story is unique: No two game sessions are alike. The story emerges from the choices you and your friends make.
- Anything is possible: Want to befriend a dragon instead of fighting it? Try to negotiate with the bandits? Go for it!
- Success isn't guaranteed: Dice add uncertainty and excitement. Sometimes you'll succeed brilliantly, sometimes you'll fail spectacularly - both make for great stories.
How It Works
- The GM sets the scene: "You enter a dimly lit tavern. The patrons eye you suspiciously."
- You describe what you want to do: "I want to approach the bartender and ask about rumors."
- Dice determine the outcome: You might roll dice to see how well you do.
- The story continues: Based on your actions and dice rolls, the GM describes what happens next.
