Animal Handling measures your ability to calm or train an animal, or get an animal to behave in a certain way. This skill represents your understanding of animal behavior and your ability to communicate with beasts.

Example Uses

  • Calm or train an animal
  • Get an animal to behave in a certain way
  • Sense an animal's emotional state
  • Handle a mount during difficult situations
  • Approach a wild animal without startling it

When to Use Animal Handling

The GM might call for a Wisdom (Animal Handling) check when you attempt to:

  • Calm a frightened horse
  • Train a pet to perform a trick
  • Keep your mount steady during combat
  • Approach a wild animal peacefully
  • Sense whether an animal is about to attack

Difficulty Examples

  • DC 10: Calming a domestic animal that knows you
  • DC 15: Training a willing animal to perform a simple trick
  • DC 20: Calming a hostile or frightened wild animal
  • DC 25: Getting a wild predator to ignore you completely
