Tool Proficiencies

Tool proficiencies represent your character's specialized training and expertise with specific tools and equipment. These proficiencies reflect your class's background, training methods, and the practical skills needed to excel in your chosen profession.
Understanding Tool Proficiencies
Unlike weapon or armor proficiencies, tool proficiencies focus on utility, crafting, and specialized knowledge. They represent months or years of training with specific tools that allow you to perform tasks others simply cannot accomplish effectively.
Types of Tool Proficiencies
Classes typically gain proficiency with tools that complement their abilities and background:
- Artisan's Tools: Specialized crafting implements like Smith's Tools, Alchemist's Supplies, or Jeweler's Tools that allow creation of specific items
- Professional Tools: Equipment like Thieves' Tools, Herbalism Kit, or Disguise Kit that support class-specific activities
- Musical Instruments: Performance tools that provide entertainment and sometimes magical benefits
- Gaming Sets: Specialized equipment for games of skill and chance
How Tool Proficiencies Work
When you have proficiency with a tool, you add your proficiency bonus to any ability check made using that tool. This bonus represents your trained expertise and familiarity with the tool's proper use.
Additionally, having proficiency often allows you to:
- Craft specific items that require the tool
- Perform specialized actions using the tool's Utilize options
- Gain Advantage when your skill proficiency also applies to the check
Class Identity Through Tools
Your tool proficiencies help establish your character's background and practical capabilities beyond combat. They suggest how your character learned their abilities and what kind of work they might have done before becoming an adventurer.
A character with Alchemist's Supplies might have studied in a laboratory, while someone proficient with Thieves' Tools could have a more questionable past. These proficiencies provide hooks for roleplaying and background development.
Practical Applications
Tool proficiencies often become crucial during downtime activities, exploration, and problem-solving scenarios. They allow you to:
- Craft useful items during rest periods or downtime
- Solve problems that can't be addressed through combat or spells
- Generate income through your crafting or professional skills
- Support the party with specialized knowledge and capabilities
Expanding Your Expertise
While your class provides initial tool proficiencies, you can often gain additional ones through background choices, character background, or advancement options. Consider how new tool proficiencies might complement your existing abilities or open up new character development opportunities.
